I TOOK A NAP AND I MISS YOU

SHORT FILM. PSEUDO-DOCUMENTARY NARRATIVE.

SCREENED AT SINGAPORE SHORTS ‘21 AND SEASHORTS 2021.

I Took A Nap And I Miss You is a student film production; A coming-of-age, drama-comedy mockumentary about a family of three - a mother and two daughters - all operating on what-ifs and varying struggles with intimacy.

With the recent death of her husband Luke, Liz juggles her emotions while navigating through that of her two daughters’ – making sure that they’re okay in the world, and that she’s okay. Liz’s teen daughter Gigi stands at the cusp of a potential romance and attempts to gain revelation about her own ambiguous feelings, unsure if what she's discovered of herself is all it is. Stacy finds companionship within an imaginary boyfriend, Nicky, getting bullied for it, bringing up concern for the family.

There had been a death in their family, but I would like to challenge the idea of major events in a person’s life affecting a person’s psyche and leaving a permanent mark – is that always the case, is it so A equals to B or is it possible that more trivial things could lead to B? It’s become too automatic to assume in the world we live in today, that certain things are explained by certain events. Stacy has an imaginary boyfriend and is getting bullied for it, but where did it come from, and does it matter? Are things only real if they exist socially? The malfunctions of intimacy are classic motherfuckers in anyone's lives, I think it a challenge to portray it without overemphasizing and with a touch of warmth, just enough of everything to be relatable and human.
